DWI I first started

Dance With Intensity - The History of DWI Latest News | About | Support | Downloads | Tools | Donate | Links | Contact Us Current Version: 2.50.00 The History of DWI I first started working on DWI in late 2000, after a friend of mine told me about this dance game that was just starting to gain popularity in North America, at least in this area. I was curious, but not overly interested. After all, I had Samba De Amigo for my Dreamcast to keep me happy - and there were no arcades near me anyway. However, after hearing enough about DDR, I found an arcade machine and gave it a try for the first time. Very fun - but I found the way the steps were displayed very confusing. I much preferred the format that Samba used - notes moving outwards from a central point. That got me thinking - I could make a dance game that used Samba 's format... so I downloaded the TinyPTC graphics library for Windows, and started working on it. I quickly became addicted to DDR, however, and imported the games for my Dreamcast and some dance mats. I got used to the layout of arrows and my project evolved into a standard DDR simulator. By December, 2000, I had managed to get arrows moving up the screen, in time with the music. I was using MSD files I had found online as a basis. The first working version of "Dance!". No scoring, grading, or interface. Only one song could be used, as it was hard-coded into the program and no song-select screen existed. The background was random noise. By this point, I had found other DDR simulators online and it became a challenge to me to try to do something better. In the months that followed, I threw together a quick song-select screen and tried to mimic the interface of 2nd Mix into the game screens. It looked awful, but I was happy with it. It also now let me play music from the official games I owned, without having to switch discs in my game console. (NB: You should have the rights to use any music you use with this or any other simulator). "Dance!", March 2001. There was a very simple title menu, that you couldn't go back to. All songs were in the same folder as the program, and all images were BMPs. There were a few sound effects, but no announcer. In May, 2001, a friend of mine found out that I had been working on a DDR clone, and asked to see it. He was very enthusiastic about what I had done so far, and wanted to help if he could. He offered to make a bunch of announcer samples for the game. Egged on by his interest in the game, I decided to try improving the main program itself. I had by this time imported 3rd, 4th, and 5th Mix, and wanted to improve the interface to make it more like these games. So I started work on it, completely redoing all the screens. Along the way I added Doubles and Solo modes, and added a way to do animations in the background during the song. djDH supplied a bunch of great announcer samples which I put into the game, and slowly the program evolved into a complete package. DDRMAX was due out late that year, and I had heard about these new 'freeze arrows'. Intrigued, I tried to find out what I could about them, and implemented them into the game. I didn't have much to go on, so the initial behaviour was different than how DDR did it. However, it did make my program the first to support freeze arrows, before DDRMAX was even in wide release. Because of this, and additions to the MSD format to allow for speed-changes and pauses, djDH and I decided it was best to change the extension. We also thought it would be cool to put the program online and see what people thought of it. So we came up with a few different names, and ultimately, "Dance With Intensity" stuck. I preferred it to the other plays on the "DDR" name. After much worry about what people would think, and whether it was right to release, we ultimately released DWI version 1.0 on December 14th, 2000. DWI 1.0, December 2001. Featured an interface that resembled 4th Mix. Multiple collections were supported, and djDH supplied the announcer samples. I went on vacation soon after releasing it, and when I came back was pleasantly surprised that people enjoyed the program. This made me want to keep working on it, adding new features and fine-tuning others. Eventually, I moved from PTC to use SDL for graphics, and eventually, DirectX for even faster performance. I added support for different skins, to change the look of the program easily, and allow for different sound-packs. In February, 2002, I released a version that added a new song-select screen and style-select screen, in the same style as 5th Mix (though the 4th Mix interface could still be used). DWI 1.50, February 2002. Featured a new song-select and style-select interface. I wanted to implement the groove radar and newer, sleeker look that the new DDRMAX games had, but didn't want to do that and still have to maintain the older 4th and 5th-Mix screens. Eventually, I decided that it was time to get rid of much of the old code and start over, with DWI2. DWI2 was a major reworking of the code, as almost every screen was changed to some extent. I also wanted to make the program look better overall, and worked hard on a new graphic design for it - instead of the grey, brushed-metal look of before, DWI2 sported a new, more interesting design of blues and whites, with much more detail. DWI 2.0, July 2002. Completely new interface, Groove Radar, and CRS files for Nonstop mode. DWI is still very much a 'work-in-progress' - it's a hobby project I enjoy working on in my spare time, and I'm glad people enjoy what I've done. There's still a lot of things I'd like to do with it. I am just one programmer, but I like to think that DWI offers users a clean, simple, and easy-to-use dance game that plays well, and innovates along the way. Thank you for your support! SimWolf. Untitled Document Contents The DWI Detection Guide Explanations of the 24 driving cues Summary A description of post-stop cues thatare predictive of DWI Introduction More than a million people have died in traffic crashes in the UnitedStates since 1966, the year of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle SafetyAct, which led to the creation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,or NHTSA. During the late 1960s and early 1970s more than 50,000 people lost theirlives each year on our nation's streets, roads and highways. Traffic safetyhas improved considerably since that time: the annual death toll has declinedsubstantially, even though the numbers of drivers, vehicles, and miles drivenall have increased. When miles traveled are considered, the likelihood ofbeing killed in traffic during the 1960s was three to four times what itis today. The proportion of all crashes in which alcohol is involved also has declined. The declines in crash risk and the numbers of alcohol-involved crashes areattributable to several factors, including the effectiveness of public informationand education programs, traffic safety legislation, a general aging of thepopulation, and law enforcement effort. NHTSA research contributed to the improved condition, in part, by providingpatrol officers with useful and scientifically valid information concerningthe behaviors that are most predictive of impairment. Continued enforcementof DWI laws will be a key to saving lives in the future. For this reason,NHTSA sponsored research leading to the development of a new DWI detectionguide and training materials, including a new training video. Many thingshave changed since 1979, but like the original training materials, the newdetection guide describes a set of behaviors that can be used by officersto detect motorists who are likely to be driving while impaired. Building upon the previous NHTSA study, the researchers interviewed officersfrom across the United States and developed a list of more than 100 drivingcues that have been found to predict blood alcohol concentrations, or BACs,of 0.08 percent or greater. The list was reduced to 24 cues during threefield studies involving hundreds of officers and more than 12,000 enforcementstops. The driving behaviors identified by the officers are presented inthe following four categories: 1) Problems in maintaining proper lane position, 2 ) Speed and braking problems, 3) Vigilance problems, and 4) Judgment problems. The cues presented in these categories predict that a driver is DWI atleast 35 percent of the time. For example, if you observe a driver to beweaving or weaving across lane lines, the probability of DWI is more than.50, or 50 percent. However, if you observe either of the weaving cues andany other cue listed in this booklet, the probability of DWI jumps to atleast .65, or 65 percent. Observing any two cues other than weaving indicatesa probability of DWI of at least 50 percent, although some cues, such asswerving, accelerating for no reason, and driving on other than the designatedroadway, have single-cue probabilities greater than 70 percent. Generally, the probability of DWI increases substantially when a driver exhibits morethan one of the cues. The research suggests that these training materials will be helpful toofficers in: Detecting impaired motorists, Articulating observed behaviors on arrest reports, and Supporting officers' expert testimony.
