A DUII Story A DUII Story Lincoln County Home Page DUII Forfeiture Program TWO DIE IN ONE-VEHICLE CRASH ON HIGHWAY 229 NEAR SILETZ By Shaun Hall Oregon State Police are continuing their investigation into the deaths of two Lincoln County men killed in a one-vehicle crash Sunday along Highway 229, south of Siletz. There are no reported witnesses to the crash that killed Daniel L Johnson, 23, of South Beach and Charles E. Trantham III, 21, of Siletz. In addition, troopers as of Monday afternoon were unable to verify the whereabouts of the men prior to their deaths. "Nobody's stepping forward," Lt. Dennis Dotson of OSP said Monday. The silver 1978 Toyota Celica coupe Johnson was driving north-bound on the highway went off the left side of the roadway near mile post 27.4, traveled through brush, and hit a tree head-on, according to an OSP report. The accident was reported Sunday night, and is believed to have occurred sometime Sunday morning, Dotson said. "It looks like they just drove off the road," the lieutenant said. No skid marks were evident. Johnson and Trantham were dead at the scene. Neither wore a seat belt. Assisting at the scene were the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Toledo Fire Department. Trantham, a Siletz resident most of his life, was employed as a backhoe operator with WW Construction in South Beach. A memorial service is set for 3 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Siletz. Johnson, a life-long resident of South Beach, was employed as a driver and route salesman for Pacific Distributors in Newport. A service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Yachats Cemetery. By Tuesday, flowers and crosses had been placed at the scene of the accident. I though I could handle it mom I always drink and drive All of my friends do mom And they are still alive. I know I did the wrong thing mom I know you are always right But I got into the car mom And drove off, into the night. I knew there would be no problem mom I've done this ever since I became a man I don't know why you worry mom I will be home as soon as I can I am driving down the road mom I can't believe what I see My car is going really fast mom And it's heading for that tree. What are all the lights and sirens mom Why is my body in such pain I wish you were here mom So I could hear your voice again. You know I am really tough mom I've never lost a fight But I am really afraid now mom I know I will die tonight. I wish I had one more chance mom To see my daughter grow I know you will take good care of her mom I know you love her so. Tell my sister not to cry mom Tell my dad to be brave And when I get to heaven mom Write "Daddy's Boy" on my grave. I know I have made you sad mom But please remember me this way Close your eyes and see my smile It's in the suns golden rays. I have one last favor mom Before I say good bye Tell my friends and cousins mom Please don't drink and drive.
