After conducting the survey for four consecutive years with similar results, The Council continues to promote the Blood Alcohol Educator (BAE) , an informative, interactive program that can be found on CD-ROM or online at www.b4udrink.org . This educational CD-ROM program is available in both Spanish and English. The BAE Cybervan The Blood Alcohol Educator was created to increase awareness among legal drinking age adults concerning their state's Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) laws and how drinking affects their individual BAC . By entering your sex, weight, number and type of drinks consumed, you can quickly learn about how alcohol affects your Blood Alcohol Concentration. The Blood Alcohol Educator program also tells users the legal blood alcohol concentration limit for driving in their state. In a continuing effort to increase the program's outreach, the Council's 13-foot colorful truck, outfitted with the English and Spanish logos of the BAE , travels across the country. Intoxicated Driving

-- Intoxicated Driving Prevention Unit [IDPU] -- Home Components Team Team Assessment Sources Teaming and Communications Assessment of Our Team Our teaming skills improved greatly during this project. At first, our team wanted to work separately and follow our own individual ideas. Teamwork throughout the early stages of our project was limited. However, later in the activity, we began to work as a team and got more things accomplished. Every person knew what needed to be done and began working together. Our teacher was also a great help, showing what needed to be done and giving advice throughout the experiment. Teaming has been good with our technical advisor, as his expertise has helped with our overall presentation of components. Our communication skills have also greatly improved within the duration of this project. Since we all had different ideas, we often had a hard time telling each other what we wanted to say. Some of us would barely talk and we constantly did not know what was being done or what needed to be accomplished. Eventually, we began to communicate more often and everything fell into place. Our teacher, Mrs. Rios, was especially helpful and often talked to each group after class. Contact with our advisor by email took a long time, but communication also greatly improved during the project. We learned many different important lessons during the duration of this project. The first lesson we learned was the importance of communication and teamwork. If we didnt learn this lesson near the beginning of the project, we would not be nearly as far as we are with our project today. Great ideas would not have been shared and the whole assignment would have been a complete failure. The second lesson we learned was the importance of following directions. Occasionally, we found ourselves in a rush to finish a component or the design of our invention because we either skipped or misread one of the directions. Since this was a project, we knew that directions were a crucial part of the outcome and that one small mistake would be costly. Finally, the last important lesson we gained from this project was learning how to be consistent and contributing to the full effort of the team. We believe that our success came from the hard work and effort we all put into this project.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE & WCJC DUII VICTIM IMPACT PANEL OF BENTON COUNTY Commitment to promoting community safety! The Restorative Justice task force is committed to promoting community safety by finding what works in reducing offender recidivism and implementing programs in Benton County. "Restorative Justice is concerned with the relationship between offender, victim, and community. The focus is on the harm done to others by crime and to ensure that the harm is repaired. We believe justice is best served when the victim, community, and offender are viewed as equal parties who receive fair and balanced attention." What is Restorative Justice? The Task Force has defined Restorative Justice in Benton County as a process that restores balance, elevates the status of victims, enhances the accountability of offenders and increases the level of participation by the community in the criminal justice system. What's their mission? To encourage and develop responses to crime in Benton County that: Provide victims with opportunities to have their needs identified and included in any plan of repair, Hold offenders accountable in ways that 0create potential for their reintegration into the community, and Actively involve the community in the design and implementation of justice. Who's on the RJ Taskforce? The Task Force on Restorative Justice includes members from the District Attorney’s Office, the Courts, the Juvenile Department, Corrections, Parole and Probation, and lay members. Let us know if you are interested in getting involved. Contact Rebekah Schweitzer at (541) 766-6647 to find out more. Pilot Project WCJC DUII Victim Impact Panel of Benton County: The Victim Impact Panel exists to educate people convicted of DUII or other related offences how tragic impaired driving may be. The Victim Impact Panel also provides victims of crime with an opportunity to have their experiences heard by offenders in a safe, structured environment. The panel consists of members of our community or nearby communities who have experienced loss due to impaired driving. This includes severe injury or the loss of a loved one. Speakers give a presentation of how an impaired driver has impacted their life and the lives of their families. Law enforcement deputies/officers as well as a trauma nurse are also speakers on the panel. Their presentations display (graphically) the consequences of poor decision making. DUII Victim Impact Panels are conducted bi-monthly and last for 1.5 hours. The taskforce began with a DUII victim impact panel and may potentially expand to include other types of crime. Any excess fees are generally used to provide grants to local law enforcement agencies in Benton County for DUII related equipment or training. Here’s what participants have said: More powerful than I thought it would be. I am deeply affected by what I heard and saw. I thank God each day that I did not cause anyone any injury (or material) or loss of life. I believe everyone should participate in a presentation of this nature. Everyone from teens to seniors. It made think and realize what could have happened the night I made a terrible decision. I was deeply moved by the grief caused by drinking and driving choices. I’m glad that I came. I don’t have the right to chose to drink and drive. This impact panel has taught me that life is too precious to make the wrong choice. Our choices affect others. I never realized how much damage driving drunk has on other people. Makes me never want to drink and drive ever again. I don’t ever want to hurt anyone because of my thoughtless actions. I never understood just how much my decisions could impact others in such a negative way. WCJC Restorative Justice History: The Restorative Justice Taskforce developed after a group of persons gathered in response to the Community and Restorative Justice Conference held in Corvallis in October 2000. The group decided that it would be worthwhile to encourage Benton County to become more restorative in its responses to crime. The group invited nationally recognized restorative justice advocate, Dennis Maloney, to speak to the Willamette Criminal Justice Council in February 2001. Out of that meeting, the Restorative Justice Taskforce was developed including a wide array of community members and criminal justice representatives. We need your help! The hardest part of running this Panel is finding people who are willing to share their story. It is not easy to talk to a group of offenders and share what often times is a tragic story. However, those who are able to share their experiences find the experience very rewarding. If speaking at one of our panels sounds like something you would like more information on, please call the Panel Coordinators: Rebekah Schweitzer at (541) 766-6647or Lynne Whiteman at (541) 766-6688.
