WTD Announces Aggressive DUI Task Force for The Holidays Media Relations Section Office of the Chief of Police 150 North Los Angeles Street Los Angeles, CA 90012 213-485-3586 213-237-1760 LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Wednesday, December 29, 1999 West Traffic Division Announces Aggressive DUI Task Force for Holidays On Wednesday, December 22, 1999, from 4:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., reserve and full-time officers from West Traffic Division will join with Valley Traffic Division in a multi-bureau concentrated effort to remove intoxicated drivers from Valley Traffic Divisions streets. Valley Traffic Division covers the North Hollywood, Foothill, West Valley, Van Nuys, and Devonshire communities. On Thursday, December 23, 1999, from 4:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., Valley Traffic Division will team with West Traffic Divisions full-time and reserve officers to patrol West Traffics areas for intoxicated drivers. West Traffic Division covers the Wilshire, West Los Angeles, Pacific, and Hollywood areas. On Friday, December 31, 1999, from 6:30 p.m. until 3:00 a.m., West Traffic reserve officers will join with West Traffics DUI task force to identify and remove intoxicated and unsafe drivers from West Traffic Divisions area. "Our message is clear. Intoxicated drivers are a tremendous safety hazard on our streets. Their actions cause significant injury and deaths in our city, and targeted enforcement of these violators will make the streets safer for the community. Making arrangements for transportation, such as appointing a designated driver, is recommended. If an impaired individual drives, we will provide transportation---to jail," Captain Paul M. Kim, Commanding Officer of West Traffic Division said. DUI task force representatives will be available for media interviews immediately after the roll call. The roll call on December 31, 1999, will be held at West Traffic Division at 6:30 p.m. The reserve coordinator for West Traffic Division is Officer Anthony and can be contacted at 213-473-0428 or 213-473-0222 for additional information. 61-8-442. Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs -- driving with excessive alcohol concentration -- ignition interlock device. 61-8-442. Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs -- driving with excessive alcohol concentration -- ignition interlock device. (1) In addition to the punishments provided in 61-8-714 and 61-8-722 , regardless of disposition and if a probationary license is recommended by the court, the court may, for a person convicted of a first offense under 61-8-401 or 61-8-406 , restrict the person to driving only a motor vehicle equipped with a functioning ignition interlock device during the probationary period and require the person to pay the reasonable cost of leasing, installing, and maintaining the device. (2) If a person is convicted of a second or subsequent violation of 61-8-401 or 61-8-406 , in addition to the punishments provided in 61-8-714 and 61-8-722 , regardless of disposition, the court shall order that each motor vehicle owned by the person at the time of the offense be either: (a) seized and subjected to the forfeiture procedure provided under 61-8-421 ; or (b) during the 12-month period beginning with the end of the period of driver's license revocation, equipped with a functioning ignition interlock device and require the person to pay the reasonable cost of leasing, installing, and maintaining the device. (3) Any restriction imposed under this section must be included in a report of the conviction made by the court to the department in accordance with 61-11-101 and placed upon the person's driving record maintained by the department in accordance with 61-11-102 .
