Live DUI Car Crash Drama Sends Message to Teenagers 05/18/01 Live DUI Car Crash Drama Sends Message to Teenagers Miami Beach - Miami Beach Senior High School's outdoor playing field will be the emotional and dramatic scene of a DUI-related car crash involving teenagers and fatalities on Thursday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m. The simulation will be complete with screaming police squad cars, fire rescue, "jaws of life" equipment, medical examiner, tears, disappointments and arrests. Don't drink and drive. That is the message that City of Miami Beach Fire Department is sending to Miami Beach High School students, especially before prom and graduation. Thousands of teenagers have died due to car crashes because somebody chose to drive under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. Over the last three years, close to 5,000 under age DUI crashes were reported in Florida, of those, 187 involved fatalities, 412 cases were in Miami-Dade County of which 11 involved fatalities and three cases involved Miami Beach High School students. For the last two years, Miami Beach High School has seen all of its seniors at graduation, thanks in part to the Cheat the Reaper program. Miami Beach Fire Rescue, the Police Department, and Miami Beach High School students will be participating in the fourth annual "Cheat the Reaper -- Live to See Your Future," a teen anti-DUI presentation which includes a simulated prom scene and car crash. The dramatized Drinking Under the Influence (DUI) - caused car crash, with all of the blood, sirens, and emergency personnel of a real-life DUI accident, will demonstrate the dangers of teens impaired by drugs or alcohol. This mock car crash will be shown to approximately 500 senior students live at theschool's playing field, days before their senior prom. By educating the students to make the correct choice and the results of the wrong choices, theCity's fire officials are attempting to reduce the number of teenagers injured -- or killed -- in DUI-caused crashes. "There is a saying - 'Good judgement comes from experience, but experience comes from bad judgement.' The goal is to substitute an educational experience in place of an actual experience, so students can use it as their reference for good judgement when peer pressure forces them to make difficult choices," said Miami Beach Public Fire and Life Safety Educator David Mogen. Traffic crashes are the greatest single cause of death for every age from five through 27 years old. Almost half of these crashes are alcohol-related. In 1997, 6,258 people, ages 15-20, were killed in traffic crashes and 2,209 of these deaths - more than 35 percent - involved alcohol. Young people are over-represented in alcohol-related fatal crashes. The alcohol involvement fatal crash rate for young drivers is about twice that of drivers over 21. In 1998, statistics reveal that 16,189 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol in the United States -- an average of one every 32 minutes. These deaths constituted approximately 38.6 percent of the total 41,967 traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "Cheat the Reaper" uses Interact Club students and Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD) members for the dramatization as victims and witnesses. Emergency services and officials involved in the mock crash are moulage, incident commander, triage officer, transportation officer, medical examiner, law enforcement officers, media, ambulance personnel, fire suppression, safety officer, extrication officer, and public information officer. During the simulated car crash, there will be vehicle extrication and victim stabilization. The Miami Beach Fire and Police Department thank the following community partners: Mount Sinai Hospital, Miami-Dade County MedicalExaminer's Office, Tremont/Beach Towing, Vista Convention Services South, Riverside-Gordon Memorial Chapels Funeral Services, Miami-Dade County Parks & Recreation Department and Miami Beach Senior High School. The event is sponsored by Mount Sinai Hospital. Miami Beach Senior High School is located at 2231 Prairie Avenue, Miami Beach. This program is part of the City of Miami Beach Fire Department's Preventive Education Program. For more information, contact Inspector David Mogen at 305-673-7123.

DUI DWAI Defense Attorney Colorado Springs Vehicular Homicide Lawyer DUI - DWAI Defense —A cultural stigma has become associated with drunk driving that was not present in our society even a decade ago. Public perception categorizes people charged with drunk driving as criminals, even before they have been convicted of any crime. Being arrested for drunk driving, driving under the influence (DUI), or driving while ability impaired (DWAI) can be an unsettling proposition, to say the least. A DUI - DWAI conviction in Colorado carries with it heavy penalties, including: A permanent criminal record Suspension or loss of license Increased insurance rates Community service Possible jail or prison time Alcohol assessment and treatment Probation Vehicle immobilization or forfeiture Serious fines Possible job loss In almost every DUI-DWAI case, a driver has two cases to contend with. The DUI-DWAI arrest results in criminal charges, but what most drivers do not realize is that an arrest also initiates a civil proceeding against the arrested motorist’s driving privileges. The legal authority to impose license suspension against a driver lies in the Colorado implied consent statute. The implied consent law states that each person who operates a motor vehicle on Colorado roadways has impliedly consented to provide a specimen of breath or blood if arrested for DUI-DWAI and provided with the applicable consequences of refusing to submit to testing. If you have been arrested or accused of drunk driving, DUI, DWAI, vehicular homicide, or any other alcohol-related criminal offense, you are probably frightened, confused, and concerned about your future and that of your family. The selection of an experienced attorney is the first step towards regaining control of your life. Please contact us today. See Online Courses   Search Alcoholism / Substance Abuse 60 Year Sentence! An Editorial Could it be that society is finally getting fed up with drunk drivers? The 60-year sentence handed down this week in a North Carolina DUI trial in which a 30-year-old repeat DUI offender was found guilty of killing four New Jersey teens after downing five drinks for "lunch," would seem to indicate that the courts are finally getting the message that the only way to guarantee that habitual drunk drivers stay off the road is to put them away. The North Carolina case drew national attention due to its CourtTV Coverage , but it is a all too familiar story repeated day after day on the highways and in the courts -- someone is killed because a drunk driver did not get the message the first time, or in this case even the second time. How Long Will This Go On? Each week here at the Alcoholism site on our daily Tragic Tales page, we time and again report cases in which repeat DUI offenders are found guilty of another senseless slaughter, but are given what seems to be "light" sentences, considering they have taken a life -- sometimes a little as a few months in jail. Many times the judges in those cases hands are tied by state laws which dictate the maximum sentences for vehicular homicide. For some reason, legislators consider getting drunk, getting behind the wheel and killing an innocent victim less of a crime than getting drunk and killing someone in a bar room brawl. Somehow those who make our laws still look upon the carnage caused by drunk drivers as "tragic accidents" rather than what they really are -- the blatant disregard of the safety of anyone who happens to get in the way by someone who drinks and makes the decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. To quote comedian Richard Pryor, how long will this bulls*** go on? Asked About Her Dog Perhaps the North Carolina trial of Melissa Lynn Marvin will send a message to the courts and lawmakers alike, that society is fed up with a system that allows repeat offenders to continue to renew their driving privileges. The case provides us with a glimpse at the attitude of many repeat offenders. Twice arrested for drunk driving offenses, the 30-year-old waitress downed three shots of booze at one bar and two margarita "grandes" at another, got in her SUV, sped through traffic changing lanes frequently with her left foot up on the dashboard, ran a red light and plowed into a small car carrying five teen-agers, killing four of them. In the aftermath of the collision, described as sounding like an explosion, Marvin at the scene asked repeatedly about the condition of her dog who was riding in the vehicle with her and never once inquired about the victims in the other car. An "experienced" DUI offender, Marvin at the hospital tried to cover up the amount of alcohol that she had consumed and refused to provide a urine sample, instead pulling up her dress and urinating on the emergency room stretcher. A court-ordered blood test two hours after the accident indicated a blood alcohol content of .21, putting it at an estimated .28 at the time of the crash. Not the Only One to Blame Marvin's defense at her trial was basically that she had not had "that much" to drink, which from her point of view was probably true. She probably had drunk a lot more than that many times before and driven home, given her driving record over the past nine years. In her eyes having "only" five drinks and driving was not "that much." She couldn't possibly be drunk! The blood test must be wrong! Apparently it was not difficult for the jury and the judge in the Marvin case to feel no sympathy for 30-year-old "amateur surfer" while finding her guilty of causing the deaths of those four innocent teens, but the truth is she does not bare the blame alone. A Little Too Late Twice previously she was arrested for drunk driving and the courts allowed her to plead to "lesser charges" and by doing so enabled her to escape facing the full consequences of her actions. So the state of North Carolina is also partially to blame for those tragic deaths. As long as we continue to have minimal punishment for first offenders and allow them to plead guilty to lesser charges, they will continue to drink and drive because in their minds they "got away with it." The line needs to be drawn after the first offense, not after the first death. It's good to see that North Carolina is finally beginning to take responsibility for maintaining the safety of its highways by putting Melissa Marvin behind bars for 60 years, but it's a bit too late for Amanda Geiger, Angela McGrady, Megan Blong, and Shana Lawler. About.com Poll Should some jail time be mandatory for first DUI offenses? Yes, all of them Yes, but only with a high BAC level No Not sure &PID= "Current Results Some states have already passed laws mandating short jail sentences for even first-time drunk driving offenses, along with fines and loss of driving privileges.
