Perhaps through its elaborate and creative marketing, the most basic, yet important fact about alcohol is often overlooked — alcohol is a drug — the most commonly used and widely abused psychoactive drug in the world. One concept that many people find difficult to accept is that alcoholism and alcohol problems are a disease. Research has shown that alcohol interacts with the body’s systems in predictable ways to lead to physiological addiction. Alcoholism is a disease — a chronic, progressive, fatal disease if not treated. Short Term Effects Even at low doses, alcohol significantly impairs the judgment and coordination required to drive a car or operate machinery safely. Low to moderate doses of alcohol can also increase the incidence of a variety of aggressive acts, including domestic violence and child abuse. Effects of moderate alcohol intake include dizziness and talkativeness. The immediate effects of a larger amount of alcohol include slurred speech, disturbed sleep, nausea, and vomiting. Hangovers are another effect after large amounts of alcohol are consumed — symptoms including headache, nausea, thirst, dizziness, and fatigue. Long Term Effects Prolonged, heavy use of alcohol can lead to addiction (alcoholism). Sudden cessation of long term, extensive alcohol intake is likely to produce withdrawal symptoms, including severe anxiety, tremors, hallucinations, and convulsions. Long-term effects of consuming large quantities of alcohol can lead to: • permanent damage to vital organs • several different types of cancer • gastrointestinal irritations, such as nausea, diarrhea, and ulcers • malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies • sexual dysfunctions • high blood pressure • lowered resistance to disease Mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy may give birth to infants with fetal alcohol syndrome . These infants may suffer from mental retardation and other irreversible physical abnormalities. In addition, research indicates that children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk than other children of becoming alcoholics. Remember — impairment begins with the first drink . Alcohol affects individuals differently. Your blood alcohol level is affected by your age, weight, gender, time of day, physical condition, prior amount of food consumed, other drugs or medication taken, and a multitude of other factors. In addition, different drinks may contain different amounts of alcohol, so it’s important to know how much and the concentration of alcohol you consume . The body metabolizes alcohol at the rate of about one drink per hour . Does drinking strong coffee or taking a cold shower have an effect on the person who is drunk? The answer is yes — the result being an alert, cold, and wet drunk. Time, and only time can sober a person up . A woman of equivalent weight drinking an equal amount of alcohol in the same time period of time as a man may have a higher blood alcohol concentration than that man. Therefore, women should refer to the BAC chart for women . Direct and indirect causes of death include drunk driving, cirrhosis of the liver, falls, cancer, and stroke. 1 At least once a year, the guidelines for low risk drinking are exceeded by an estimated 74% of male drinkers and 72% of female drinkers aged 21 and older. 2 65% of the youth surveyed said that they got the alcohol they drink from family and friends. 7 Nearly 14 million Americans meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorders. 5 Youth who drink alcohol are 50 times more likely to use cocaine than those who never drink alcohol. 3 Among current adult drinkers, more than half say they have a blood relative who is or was an alcoholic or problem drinker. 1 Across people of all ages, males are four times as likely as females to be heavy drinkers. 1 More than 18% of Americans experience alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence at some time in their lives. 6 Traffic crashes are the greatest single cause of death for persons aged 6–33. About 45% of these fatalities are in alcohol-related crashes. 4 Underage drinking costs the United States more than $58 billion every year — enough to buy every public school student a state-of-the-art computer. 2 Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among young people. 1 Problem drinkers average four times as many days in the hospital as nondrinkers — mostly because of drinking-related injuries. 1 Alcohol kills 6½ times more youth than all other illicit drugs combined. 2 Concerning the past 30 days, 50% of high school seniors report drinking, with 32% report being drunk at least once. 2 Sources 1 Substance Abuse: The Nation’s Number One Health Problem, Feb. 2001 2 Mothers Against Drunk Driving 3 National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse 4 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 5 Alcohol Health & Research World 6 National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Analysis 7 The Century Council Contact Us | Agency Services | Site Map | Directory of Resources © 2002–2006 GDCADA, All Rights Reserved. Principle of Testing Types of Devices: Breathalyzer Types of Devices: Intoxilyzer Types of Devices: Alcosensor III or IV Lots More Information Compare Prices for Breathalyzers Police officers use portable breath-testing machines like this one to find out if a driver has a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. We hear and read about drivers involved in an accident who are later charged with drunken driving, and usually a news report on the accident will say what the driver's blood alcohol level was and what the legal limit for blood alcohol is. A driver might be found to have a level of 0.15, for example, and the legal limit is 0.08. But what do those figures mean? And how do police officers find out if a driver they suspect has been drinking is actually legally drunk? You have probably heard about the Breathalyzer , but may wonder exactly how a person's breath can show how much that person has had to drink. It is important for public safety that drunken drivers be taken off the roads. Of the 42,000 traffic deaths in the United States in 1999, about 38 percent were related to alcohol . Drivers who can pass roadside sobriety tests -- they can touch their noses or walk a straight line -- still might be breaking the legal limit for blood alcohol and be a hazard on the road. So police officers use some of the latest technology to detect alcohol levels in suspected drunken drivers and remove them from the streets. Many officers in the field rely on breath alcohol testing devices (Breathalyzer is one type) to determine the blood alcohol concentration ( BAC ) in drunken-driving suspects. In this article, we will examine the scientific principles and technology behind these breath alcohol testing devices. DUII. Their efforts contributed

CVU Members Speak On DUII At Pioneer Pacific College CVU Members Speak On DUII At Pioneer Pacific College CRIME VICTIMS UNITED On February 1, 2004, CVU and MADD members Marie Armstrong and Anne Pratt spoke to a criminal justice class at Pioneer Pacific College in Springfield, Oregon. The topic was Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and its impact. Marie Armstrong's son Chance was killed by a drunk driver in 1996. Chance's girlfriend survived with a brain stem injury. The driver was sentenced to 90 days in jail for criminally negligent homicide. Released from jail, he drove with a revoked license, continued to drink and drive and violated other terms of his release including being a felon in possession of a firearm. Anne Pratt's son, Brian Hood, was killed by a drunk driver in 1998. Her experience with the criminal justice system led her and her husband Bruce to work for changes to Oregon's laws on DUII. Their efforts contributed to several bills passed by the legislature, most notably Brian's Bill , which increased penalties for criminally negligent homicide. Marie and Anne spoke about the impact of drunk drivers on their lives and the lives of other Oregonians, and their experiences with the criminal justice system. Pioneer Pacific student Jami Clark, who arranged for Marie and Anne to present to instructor Shan Weggland's class, wrote a note of thanks: February 3, 2004 Dear Anne and Marie: Thank you for making time to attend my class and be our guest speakers. I know that your presence has done two things: help you to speak about your pain and educate others so they too are not victims. It was very admirable for you to share such a painful experience with a room full of strangers. The power point was very informative and provided information that was not common knowledge. The pictures of your sons also made the situation a reality and not just a name in the obituary. The pictures helped to place a face with a name. In addition, seeing the copies of the Bills that were passed also helped us with the larger picture. I am in awe of your courage and your strength to continue to move forward and fight for stricter punishments and your hopefulness in the prevention you stand behind. I certainly agree that this knowledge needs to be shared with all counties of Oregon and perhaps nation wide. Knowledge is power and a lot of people do not have the knowledge. Keep your heads held up high and your passion growing, for this will be a tough road to travel. I would like for you to remember the following when things become tougher than normal. "A single drop of water begins a waterfall, and look what comes from that." ~Power of One~ You may be a single drop of water now; however, soon other drops will follow. Please keep me in mind when letters need to be written so we may pass more Bills. Sincerely Yours, Jami M.
